Reclaim the art of perinatal nursing

Because nursing is about more than getting the tasks done…

It's about the heart and art of serving families.

Welcome!  I’m Kelly…

Nurse educator, community midwife, and a lifetime student of birth.  Committed to translating physiologic principles for the hospital setting, I offer group mentorship, restorative retreats, and debriefs for nurses that are looking to change the culture of birth.

With over twenty years in the birth world, I’ve worked in both hospital and home birth.  I have taught over 4,000 nurses as an educator.  My work has been featured at state level AWHONN conferences, GOLD Labor & Delivery Symposium, and the Spinning Babies® Confluence.

It is a privilege to work with so many nurses who want to revolutionize their practice.  As a mentor, I support nurses to become deeply skilled and well resourced change agents.  I help labor and delivery nurses transform hospital birth by reclaiming the art of perinatal nursing.

From Frustrated & Under Resourced to Inspired Action

Despite your passion for your work, you find yourself feeling exhausted by the overmedicalization of birth, overuse of interventions, and families lacking knowledge about the process.  You wonder, “How can I create profound change in the hospital I work in?  How do I get buy-in from colleagues and overcome obstacles with management or on the floor?”  Your heart aches when you see families have challenging births, and when you feel like you don’t have the power to shift it.  The status quo of your work leaves you feeling unfulfilled…you know there is MORE to being a perinatal nurse.  But how do you get there?

Nurses are a force for change in the world, but they need support

As a new nurse, I desperately wanted to improve outcomes by changing unit culture,  but I lacked the skills to do so.  I felt like I had been trained how to do the tasks of my job, but I knew there was more to supporting birth than charting or giving meds.  I wanted to not only grow in my own practice, but change how birth is approached in the hospital setting.  It is from this experience that I have curated a curriculum, tailored to the needs of the perinatal nurse, to apply principles of systems thinking principles and transform the culture.

Working with five core dimensions, we’ll reclaim the art of perinatal nursing.

  • Connect to your WHY…who do you serve and how?
  • Develop the communication skills to navigate conflict and advocate for physiology
  • Tap into the superpower of holding boundaries
  • Improve skills in labor support, palpation, and more
  • Create actionable steps for transforming your nurse practice
  • Learn new perspectives from elder birthworkers
  • Build relationships with other nurses committed to being a force for CHANGE

What does it mean to be a BirthWise nurse?

You understand how to use systems level thinking to approach problems on the unit.  People look to you as a mentor and leader in supporting physiologic birth.  You’ve deepened your skill set in so many ways: how you communicate with families and colleagues, how you support someone in labor, and how you resource yourself to get your own needs met while taking care of others.  You are part of a supportive community of people who care deeply about birth and are creating a new culture of perinatal nursing.

I believe we can transform the culture of hospital birth and that nurses are at the heart of the change

Nurses are hungry, not just for knowledge, but for wisdom. They can do incredible things with the right support (in fact they already do great things even without a lot of support!).

I’ve educated and mentored thousands of nurses, with so many inspiring results…one nurse decided to organize her unit for better pay…another went from being on the edge of leaving bedside nursing altogether to enrolling in midwifery school. These nurses are the reason I do what I do! They are changing the culture of birth and changing the world, and I am honored to witness it.
